Many of us want to contribute to mitigating the devastating potential effects of climate change, but it’s often hard to see what will have the greatest impact. This unique non-executive role enables you to use your commercial skills and professional experience to make a tangible, long-term positive difference to environmental resilience.

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology is a not-for-profit, independent research centre with over 50 years’ experience of monitoring and modelling environmental change and generating evidence-driven solutions to complex environmental challenges. Scientific curiosity, integrity and transparency are at the heart of how we work. We seek to understand our environment, how it sustains life, and humanity’s impact on it – so that together, people and nature can prosper. Our research extends from molecular biology to global climate modelling, and our fieldwork is carried out across the world, from the semi-arid West African Sahel to the rainforests of South East Asia.

The Earth’s environment is a complex system, with every part affecting every other, and we take an equally integrated approach to solving the world’s environmental challenges. We believe that the best solutions are co-designed and co-delivered, so our strategic partnerships cross borders, sectors and disciplines. Working in collaboration, we provide the data and understanding that governments, businesses and researchers need to build thriving human and ecological communities. Operating from four UK locations, CEH employs 360 scientists and has a £40m annual budget; our intention is to become a charitable company by the end of 2019.

A key element of our forward strategy is the development of a robust commercial model, which will in turn enable our planned trading subsidiary to develop new income streams from our world-class research capabilities, and underpin our future effectiveness and reach. This role offers the opportunity to be in at the beginning of a ground-breaking shift in the dissemination and application of environmental research, bringing our world-class capacity to a truly global audience. The outcome will be a wholly new organisation, capable of identifying and maximising opportunities to originate accurate, meaningful research, and use it to the most decisive effect.

Working closely with our expert board and executive team, you’ll apply extensive knowledge and understanding to the challenge of optimising the impact of CEH’s research and innovation portfolio. We want to hear from experienced, influential and expert individuals who can play a genuinely non-executive role in shaping the future model, and then supporting its implementation. Candidates are likely to have held a senior position in a research-led incubator / start-up, environmental consultancy or research organisation, with significant exposure to commercial development and  an excellent grasp of how to maximise research-based opportunities. Close familiarity with the range of modes of knowledge exchange is essential, as are high-level skills in product and service innovation, and a sophisticated approach to non-executive strategy and influence.

Diversity of perspectives, background and insight are invaluable in our work, and we would particularly like to hear from candidates whose professional and personal profiles will bring us new understanding and capacity..
